Statistics on chronic kidney disease

  • 26 million American adults have CKD and millions of others are at increased risk.1
  • One in nine adults in the United States have chronic kidney disease (CKD), and many of them don’t even know it!1
  • Early detection of kidney disease is important
  • Heart disease is a major concern for people with CKD.1
  • Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the best estimate of kidney function.1
  • Hypertension causes CKD and CKD causes hypertension.1
  • Persistent proteinuria (protein in the urine) means CKD may be present.1
  • High risk groups include those with diabetes, hypertension, and family history of kidney disease.1
  • African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and senior citizens are at increased risk.1
  • Simple laboratory tests can detect CKD.1
  • About 38% of all Americans being treated for kidney failure annually have diabetes.2
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure) causes more than 25,000 new cases of kidney failure annually in the United States.3
